Developing an equity strategy in your legal workplace

Nova Scotia’s diversity is increasingly reflected in its legal profession. With this comes the expectation that lawyers are able to communicate effectively with diverse clients and competently manage a diverse workplace.

This expectation is formalized in the Society’s efforts to transform legal services regulation through its fifth regulatory objective:

Promote diversity, inclusion, substantive equality and freedom from discrimination in the delivery of legal services and the justice system.

This expectation is further outlined in the Law Office Management Standard #8 – Equity and Diversity.

The resources in this portal provide lawyers and legal services organizations with guidance on employment equity and cultural competence. They include introductory resources, model policies, educational videos and assessment tools.

The reference library provides notable Canadian cases, key legislation, Barristers’ Library resources, and foundational documents on equity and diversity in the Canadian and Nova Scotian legal services sector.

These resources are tools to help lawyers and legal services organizations devise their own equity strategies in accordance with their unique circumstances. They are not meant to be used verbatim. Some are tailored for other jurisdictions yet still contain useful ideas and approaches. Always check the current state of relevant laws before implementing any strategy using these materials.
